Panzer Law's Five Steps to Prepare for Divorce

1. Preparation is critical.  Speak to an attorney early on, before taking any action. Develop a gameplan - divorce is stressful, however a strong gameplan can help ensure that a "bad" divorce can still have a "good" ending.

2. Documentation is important.  Keep a journal and document activities and steps that both you and your spouse perform that affect or pertain to the divorce. Keep accurate records of any financial moves or activities with stated reasons for the activity. Be aware that this journal is a written record and may be obtained by the opposing side for use in the divorce proceedings.

3. Don't sign anything, or agree to anything, not even just verbally. Discuss all decisions, concessions, arrangements and agreements with your attorney.

4. Protect your assets.  List all of your assets in your home and those in storage, at your office or place of business, at your second home, etc....be sure to list them all, and if possible take pictures or videotape with a date stamp. Safeguard your personal accounts and secure your most valuable personal possessions away from the family home. Identify, with your attorney, how to handle joint credit cards and joint bank accounts.

5. Stay positive and focused.  Everything should be performed one step at a time, methodically and carefully. Do not allow your emotions to impede your efforts toward a well-planned, as-smooth-as-possible divorce. Do not play dirty.
